Middle Way was founded by husband and wife team Gavin and Catriona Monson. Previously Gavin was a mechanical engineer and Catriona worked in innovation and regulatory roles within the Scottish food industry.
Upon realising that within the soft drinks market there are few lower sugar offerings that do not contain any sweeteners or additives we decided that we had the answer to our endless quest for a tasty yet healthy option. In 2017 we created Middle Way, with the main goal of creating great tasting naturally brewed soft drinks by combining traditional methods with modern recipes.
Due to the unique nature of our fermentation process we felt that to make our dream a reality we needed to make the products ourselves rather than outsource. With Gavin’s background in engineering and Catriona’s background in the drinks industry we felt well equipped to take on the challenge of turning an empty industrial unit into a working factory. You can read more about our factory fit-out in our blog here.
We are very proud of our location, our process and our products, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we do.
Middle Way makes innovative and great tasting soft drinks using traditional cultures. Our products are based on the water kefir culture – a symbiotic colony which converts sugar and minerals into vitamins and other healthy compounds. It is a very similar brewing process to beer making, however our cultures do not produce an alcoholic drink. Once brewing is complete we filter, and flavour the base using pure fruit juices. We then bottle and lightly pasteurise our drinks.
We currently make three variants; apple and ginger, cherry, and lemon. Our drinks are made using only a handful of natural ingredients and do not contain any sweeteners, colourings or preservatives. With half the sugar of traditional sodas and fruit juices we offer a genuine alternative to those looking for a tasty yet healthy soft drink.
All our drinks are made from start to finish at our custom-fitted factory located near the beautiful and tranquil shores of Loch Lomond.
Throughout history there have been many references to the ‘middle way’ as an approach to life, particularly within Buddhism. Fundamentally it is the belief that the path between two extremes leads to fulfilment and happiness. It’s all about finding balance in all aspects of life.
We use traditional brewing methods to cut the amount of sugar in our drinks. This way you get to enjoy a drink that is both tasty and natural. Our drinks range from 58 calories to 70 calories per bottle so can be regularly enjoyed as part of a balanced diet, and you can be sure that you are not consuming any ‘nasties’ – just a naturally lower sugar refreshing drink.
